Headline Evaluation

So these were the prints that we're chosen for the headline competition.

In my rationale and statement of intent i said i wanted to explore design for print especially screen printing. The headline brief i think was a good brief in that it gave you a direction of where to go to search for a concept and it was pretty simple to do so. I began this brief with some dithering as usual but i think i came out on top. The simplicity of each print made it easy to produce and line up.

Layouts

I experimented with different layouts and colours. I knew i wanted 2 different shades of red and a greyish/black colour. The idea is light shining through an open door onto a pool of blood; which is what the basis of the article was.

I decided this was the best layout. I've developed my work practise and arranged my time better, and produced this piece of work in a couple of hours, if that. I feel i am more suited to shorter deadlines, as i work better under pressure

Headline 4: A bloodbath on my doorstep

This article was about living in Rio de Janeiro in an area considered peaceful and away from the trouble and gang warfare. Except one day some gangsters came and got shot up by police on this poor womens doorstep.

Researching into how Blood flows after a shooting
Not going to post any images as they are pretty disturbing

Headline 3: The Right To Be Heard

So the BNP are going to be on Question time tonight. This article was featured in the Garden and focused on freedom of speech and how everyone has the right to voice their opinion. I found this amazing quote by Noam Chomsky 'If we don't believe in freedom of expression for those that we despise, we don't believe in it at all'

I decided to run with the microphone and type idea. Trying out different logos.
I was swaying towards some illustrative type, but decided to go with a style and layout that worked in series with the For Sale poster.

I prefer the blue ones. But i can always experiment with different colours for each one. Tempted to try and create each headline print from now on in 2 colours or even one.

FOR SALE

I also revisited my Fire Sale headline. I'm trying to keep things simple and keep a series of the prints that actually work alone and in series.

From the Type based project i was working on with the social rants. I stuck with experimenting with the counters of the type. I think these are working really well and it works in series with the I Will Be Heard Print.
The Red on White doesn't work as well as the full colour background

The spacing between the two lines is a little off putting. To close to edges.

Can be read as an O but is harder. Works better when the shape of Great Britain makes up the counter.

I think this is the final

The Sun Turns Blue

I was done with the Sun part of my headline brief, but after the crit i've been finding a way to contextualise the work without it been just a print.

I wont be using this actually newspaper to print on. I will be using this edition of the newspaper

I found a website where you can order back catalogues of newspapers

Headline Recap

I redid the sun emblem after the crit last week. I think the ladders and small paint brush add to the aesthetic. Its funny i saw a sun newspaper the other day and they'd actually put a blue sun logo on the front.

Headline: Week 2 Done

I researched into different adverts from the 50's and 60's
http://s-colley0710-dc.blogspot.com/2009/10/ads.html

I tried finding vintagey looking fonts and cross referenced them with the images on my design context blog. I wanted to create a series of small advertisements for the public assets Gordon Brown plans on selling.

These are the different variations of the adverts. I just need to make a decision and i want to print them all together with perforations, as if they are tear away ads from an old newspaper or magazine.
